in Lepanto's annual TERRAPIN DERBY! Otherwise
called the "Turtle Race" this is a crowd pleaser event
when hundreds of Terrapins are lined up to take off
running for the finish line. Watermelon slices are
placed at the goal line to entice the turtles to turn on
Speed!
Each turtle is numbered and cheered on to bring in
the three winning prizes of the race. The turtles have
been racing in Lepanto since 1930 when the American
Legionaires started the event. From 1982 until 1999
the Terrapin Derby was feted by the Lepanto Museum.
New sponsors of the annual Terrapin Derby of Lepanto
are the men of the Lepanto Fire Dept. who promise you
an entertaining day of music, craft booths, drawings,
Terrapin Queens, 5-K run-walk, and food galore
before ending with a street dance.
